SUMMER TO AUTUMN WARDROBE TRANSITION

SUMMER TO AUTUMN WARDROBE TRANSITION

Summer brings sunshine, holidays, and light, breathable outfits. But as the nights start to draw in and there’s a slight chill in the air, it’s time to think about transitioning your wardrobe from summer to autumn.

Switching seasons doesn’t just mean swapping sandals for boots, it’s the perfect opportunity to care for your summer favourites and prep your wardrobe with autumn essentials that will see you through the colder months in style. Julia is here to share her expert tips to help you transition your wardrobe smoothly, and stylishly, into the new season.

HOW TO STORE SUMMER CLOTHES

IMPLEMENT THE 3-3-3 RULE

The easiest way to avoid overthinking your seasonal switch? Follow the 3-3-3 rule. When going through your summer wardrobe, select 3 pieces you love, 3 that need replacing next year, and 3 that are ready to donate or recycle. It’s a simple yet effective way to clear space while keeping what truly matters.

CLEAN EVERYTHING THOROUGHLY

Before anything goes into storage, it’s essential to make sure every item is thoroughly clean. Even the faintest traces of sunscreen, body oils, or perfume can lead to discolouration over time, and unfortunately, these invisible marks can also attract clothes moths. For delicate summer fabrics like silk, linen, or lace, hand washing is always the gentlest option. A mild detergent, like our Laundry Liquid, is ideal for refreshing these pieces without damaging the fibres.

Once your items are clean and dry, consider giving them a final press with a light mist of Floral Ironing Water. It adds a subtle, long-lasting fragrance and helps your clothes feel freshly laundered, even months later. A little extra care now will go a long way when you unpack your summer wardrobe next year.

USE BREATHABLE STORAGE CONTAINERS

Once your clothes are freshly cleaned and nicely sorted, it’s time to pack them away carefully. Using Breathable Storage Boxes or Storage Bags is a great way to keep your summer favourites safe while allowing air to circulate. This helps prevent any moisture buildup that can cause mold or damage to delicate fabrics. It’s best to avoid plastic bags or containers for long-term storage, as they tend to trap humidity and can leave your clothes feeling musty or even cause discolouration.

For extra protection, especially with softer or more delicate pieces, try lining them with Acid-Free Tissue Paper. This helps maintain the garment’s shape and prevents creases or fading while tucked away.

FOLD, DON'T HANG (IN MOST CASES)

Most summer fabrics like cotton and linen do best when folded and stored flat. This helps avoid any unwanted stretching or misshaping over time. But for those delicate strappy tops and pretty summer dresses that really need hanging, we’d recommend using Rubber Non-Slip Hangers. They’re brilliant at keeping your clothes from slipping off and help keep the shape just right, so your favourite garments stay looking fresh and ready to wear when the sun comes back around.

PROTECT AGAINST PESTS AND MOISTURE

Clothes moths absolutely adore natural fibres like cotton, silk, and linen, so unfortunately, many of your summer favourites can be at risk. Before you seal up your storage, it’s a good idea to give your clothes a little extra protection.

Our Anti-Moth Products, like Sachets and Sprays, work gently and naturally to keep those pesky pests at bay while also leaving your garments smelling fresh. Just pop them into your storage boxes, drawers, or hanging areas, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing your wardrobe is well looked after all year round.

AUTUMN WARDROBE ESSENTIALS YOU'LL NEED THIS YEAR

As you pack away your lightweight summer pieces, now is the perfect time to build a functional and stylish autumn wardrobe. These autumn wardrobe essentials are timeless, versatile, and perfect for layering.

1. OVERSIZED KNIT SWEATS

An absolute autumn classic and a true wardrobe hero. Oversized knit sweaters are perfect for layering on those crisp, cooler days and bring a cosy, relaxed vibe to any outfit. When choosing your knits, opt for high-quality fabrics in neutral shades like cream, camel, or soft greys, these tones are incredibly versatile and easy to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe.

To keep your knitwear looking its best season after season, be mindful of how you store them: always fold rather than hang to avoid stretching, and use natural moth deterrents such as Cedar or May Chang Sachets

Washing sparingly is also key. Be sure to air your knits between wears instead of washing too often, which helps preserve their softness and shape over time.

2. STAPLE TEES

A simple cotton tee might seem basic, but it’s a true layering essential that can transform your outfit with minimal effort. Classic colours like white, black, and soft grey are incredibly adaptable and serve as the perfect foundation beneath blazers, chunky sweaters, or timeless trench coats.

The beauty of a high quality tee lies in its ability to add warmth and polish without bulk, ensuring you look effortlessly put-together whether you’re heading to work or out for a casual weekend stroll.

Top tip: When selecting your tees, look for breathable cotton with a good weight, it’ll keep you comfortable and maintain its shape even after multiple wears!

3. LOAFERS, A MUST HAVE THIS AUTUMN!

Loafers really are the perfect blend of comfort and style, making them an absolute must-have for this tricky in-between season. They work just as well with jeans as they do with smart trousers or even dresses, giving you that polished but relaxed vibe whether you’re at the office or out at the weekend.

At the moment, the Loro Piana loafer is having a major moment, everyone’s loving its classic, luxurious feel. But don’t worry if that’s a bit out of reach; there are loads of brilliant, more affordable loafers on the high street and online. I’d recommend checking out places like Debenhams and ASOS where you can find really stylish, comfortable pairs that won’t break the bank.

4. ANKLE OR KNEE-HIGH BOOTS

When it comes to autumn footwear, ankle and knee-high boots are true investment pieces,  stylish, practical, and so versatile. If you can, try to have at least one pair of each, so you’ve got options depending on your mood and outfit.

Ankle boots are fantastic for casual days and work perfectly with jeans or skirts, while knee-high boots add a bit of drama and polish, especially when paired with dresses or over skinny trousers.

Top tip: For boots that truly last and look amazing season after season, opt for high-quality leather or suede.

5. STATEMENT TRENCH COATS

There’s something timeless and utterly chic about a well-made trench coat. It’s the perfect lightweight layer for those in-between days when it’s not quite cold enough for a heavy coat but you still need something to block the breeze.

Choose a trench with a bit of structure and subtle details like belt ties or classic buttons, it’ll elevate both casual and formal looks effortlessly. Whether you’re heading to work, meeting friends for coffee, or running errands, a statement trench adds a touch of sophistication while keeping you comfortable.

Plus, it’s a weather-friendly option that pairs beautifully with everything from jeans to dresses!

6. BOXY FIT BLAZERS

A boxy blazer is the kind of piece that effortlessly bridges the gap between smart and casual, perfect whether you’re heading back to the office or catching up with friends over brunch. The relaxed, slightly oversized fit adds a cool, modern edge to any outfit without feeling too formal or stiff.

Top tip: Layer it over a tee, dress, or even a lightweight knit for instant style points.

7. STRUCTURED HANDBAGS OR CROSSBODY BAGS

Structured handbags and crossbody bags are quickly becoming the autumn wardrobe essential you’ll need this year, and for good reason. As practicality and real-life dressing continues to influence seasonal fashion, these sleek, functional styles strike the perfect balance between fashion-forward and effortlessly wearable. Whether you’re juggling errands, heading to work, or simply want to elevate your everyday outfit, a structured silhouette offers the polish and versatility that autumn demands.

So, as you organise your accessories this season, make room for one (or two!) of these must-haves, you’ll be reaching for them again and again.
