HOW TO ORGANISE YOUR ACCESSORIES

STORING AND CLEANING YOUR WINTER GARMENTS Reading HOW TO ORGANISE YOUR ACCESSORIES 7 minutes

Have you got more accessories than you know what to do with? Maybe you’ve got more scarves than there are days in winter? Perhaps your shoe collection is getting out of control? Don't worry, we’ve got you!

When organising your accessories, we recommend starting from scratch, carefully sorting through what you want to keep and then storing these items in safe, organised places where you’ll be able to easily find them.

There are many wonderful ways that you can organise your accessories, so we’ve created a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process.

WHAT TO KEEP, DONATE OR DISCARD

The first thing to do when organising your accessories is decide what you want to keep, what you could donate and what you should discard.

Start by taking all accessories out of your drawers, cupboards, boxes or bags and laying them out on a table or flat surface where nothing can get lost or ruined. This way, you can see all of your accessories in one place, making it much easier to sort through them. Then, create three clear piles – ‘keep’, ‘donate’ and ‘discard’.

KEEP

When deciding which things to keep, you could consider these things:

  • Does it fit with your current style?
  • Is it in good working condition?
  • If you haven’t worn or used it in the last 6 months, are you likely to use it in the next 6 months?

By answering these questions about each accessory, you should have a good idea if something is worth keeping or if it’s just taking up valuable space!

DONATE

Out of the accessories that you don’t want to keep, which things are in good enough condition for you to donate? Do you have a friend or family member who would absolutely love your cashmere scarf? Perhaps a work colleague who’s been eyeing up your brown handbag for a while now?

Alternatively, you could donate to a local charity like the British Heart Foundation, who accept all sorts of accessories like shoes, scarves, and jewellery, and it all goes to a good cause.

Whether you donate an item to charity or give an unwanted accessory to a friend, you’re helping to reduce waste and protect the environment.

DISCARD

If you have any accessories that are broken beyond repair, or not in good enough condition to be donated, you should discard them, as they’ll only be taking up space and collecting dust! Always check with your local recycling centre on what could be recycled and what should go in general waste.

QUICK CLEAN

Finally, a quick clean is a great way to reset any boxes or drawers. Wiping down drawers with a damp cloth will remove dust and dirt, you could even go the extra mile and use our Drawer Sachets, which will ward off moths and keep your items smelling wonderful.

STORING ACCESSORIES PROPERLY

There are endless ways you could store your accessories, for example:

  •  Our Knitwear Storage Bags are perfect for safely storing your hats, scarves, gloves and other woolly accessories. These bags are wonderful for organising delicate accessories, ensuring that they’re kept protected from moths and fabric snagging. When using these storage bags, ensure items lie flat, or are neatly folded to ensure the bag is being used at full capacity.
  • Drawer organisers are a fantastic way to store accessories in your drawers. By clearly separating different items into designated sections, you will be able to find your items more easily and have a neat solution for organising your accessories.
  • Our Storage Boxes can hold items like shoes, bags, and other accessories and are a perfect solution for keeping your things in great condition, whilst looking chic and stylish in your space. They are made from strong card and come flat-packed, so when they are not in use, they can be stored under your bed for safekeeping. They fit in most standard wardrobes, as well as looking neat on display. You can line them with our Acid-Free Tissue Paper, which has been specifically processed to remove contaminants and have neutral PH levels, ensuring there is no discolouration of the fabrics.
  • A great way of storing accessories like belts and scarves is by using a hanging wardrobe storage organiser. These have different compartments that hang from your clothes rail at one side of your wardrobe, ensuring that you conserve space and display your accessories clearly. • Our Fabric Shoe Boxes are elegant, stylish and have been designed with a clear window at the front so you can pick out the shoes you need in an instant!
  • Have you ever neatly stored something away, only to not be able to find it a month later? Well, I certainly have! That’s why our Storage Description Cards have been specifically designed to be used with our storage bags and storage boxes, and are a foolproof way of organising (and finding) your accessories.

JEWELLERY

To organise your jewellery, you should consider how and where you would like to store it. For example:

  • Jewellery boxes are great if you’re looking to keep all of your jewellery in one place.
  • Jewellery stands and hangers are fantastic options if you are looking to display your jewellery on a dressing table or cabinet.
  • Jewellery dishes can be really useful for keeping small pieces of jewellery that you wear regularly, close by or on your bedside table.

You could also consider organising your jewellery by type, metal or occasion – this way, you’ll know exactly where you can find your gold dangly earrings or your silver chain necklace!

SCARVES

To organise your scarves, you can either use storage boxes or storage bags. Ensure that scarves are neatly folded so that they don’t crease, and lay thicker, heavier scarves at the bottom, and lighter scarves at the top.

Alternatively, you could hang your scarves in your wardrobe. When hanging your scarves, we recommend carefully folding the scarf over the horizontal bar of the hanger, as well as using our Hanger Extensions to conserve space. You could even go the extra mile and use our Hanging Sachets, which will help to keep your scarves safe from moths and smelling beautifully fresh!

HATS

Hats can certainly be a tricky accessory to organise, as they come in so many different shapes and sizes. To organise your hats, we recommend storing them by type, so, woolly hats can be stored in our knitwear bags (either with your scarves or separately, depending on how many you have), baseball caps could be carefully placed in a designated drawer and larger, statement hats can be perfectly stacked in our large storage boxes.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR ACCESSORIES

Choosing the right storage solution for your accessories is not only an important part of keeping your space looking neat, but it is also crucial in order to keep accessories in the best possible condition. For example, some poorly made storage boxes could cause your clothes to become discoloured, or bad-quality jewellery boxes could cause your necklaces to rust.
